HPA students in grades K-8 presented, “Meet the Experts: An Evening with AVID” on May 3rd. This event showcased the many ways that AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an integral part of the daily interactions at Havasu Preparatory Academy. Student guides representing the universities ASU, U of A, NAU, and GCU led families and guests to different classrooms on campus, where they received a firsthand look at several key areas of AVID integration. AVID student experts demonstrated and explained such concepts as Philosophical Chairs, Interactive notebooks, organization with agendas and planners, and collaborative groups. Guests visited all four areas throughout the evening, and had an opportunity to observe students in action and to ask the students questions. Students of all ages participated to give the families a clear understanding of AVID implementation throughout the grade levels. The evening concluded with speeches given by two HPA students, sixth grader Anita O., and fifth grader Castyn S. Since these students have attended HPA since Kindergarten, they were able to look back and provide a good perspective on the tools AVID has given them to be successful students. Mrs. Gates, HPA 4th/5th grade teacher stated, "It is so gratifying to see all the students applying these AVID strategies so effortlessly. Every grade level builds upon the next in expectations, and when they reach that level of expertise, they ultimately have been given skills to use in their daily lives. I'm proud to be an AVID educator and I'm even more grateful that my own children are be given these opportunities to flourish. "
